Thank you to GPSA for the opportunity to spend 8 weeks at Nazarene General Hospital in Papua New Guinea learning about the health system, conducting research and rotating on the General Surgery team. I had the opportunity to conduct a research project looking into the causes and severity of trauma presentations to this provincial hospital for both children and adults. From this preliminary data, the hospital has insight into the causes of trauma in the region. I also rotated as a surgical trainee, assisting with over 70 operative cases ranging from pediatric to obstetric to general surgery. Lastly, I assisted the executive team with preparations for an upcoming national accreditation visit. This opportunity helped me become a better surgeon, researcher, professional, and global citizen. Without the support of GPSA, this experience would not have been possible.

Thank you so much to GPSA for sponsoring my trip to Nazarene General in Papua New Guinea. Because of your support, I was able to spend two months at the hospital volunteering along with my husband, and we both hope to go back. During our visit, there were many memorable and meaningful moments. Inspiring: the day a happy kid walked out of the hospital after requiring an emergent chest tube placement, followed by multiple rounds of streptokinase, and eventually a successful VATS lung decortication to clear out his empyema. Encouraging: the day I finally did enough open inguinal hernia repairs in succession to complete not just one, but three in a row without more senior help. Joyful: successfully delivering twins via C-section. Exciting: making friends with the local trainees as we worked, researched, and took calls together. Fulfilling: the day my husband joined us in the operating room, and I showed him what I do for a living and what has motivated me to work so hard for the last 10 years. This trip reaffirmed my dedication to improving access to surgical care for people in low-resource settings around the world.
